To enable staff and patrons to limit their searches in the PAC/Staff client for“only children’s†materials or “only adult†materials it has been suggested that target audience in the bibliographic record be re-examined. Currently Technical Services staffs use the following target audiences: preschool, primary school, pre-teen, juvenile, young adult and general. It was decided at the Operations Committee meeting on June 6 ,2007 that general should not be used, but adult should be used. The staffs at MVLS, SALS & SCPL will not add preschool, primary school or pre-teen to records, but they will not remove this designation from valid cataloging sources. The staffs will add, juvenile for all materials created for children, including G and PG movies; young adult for all print and audiobooks that deal with teenagers and adult for everything else, including PG-13, R and NR movies.

At the Opeartions Committee meeting on April 4, 2007 it was decided that MVLS/SALS catalogers will make individual records for graphic novel titles. Patrons and staff will be able to immediately see the title of the series, volume number and specific title (when available) in the brief display of the PAC.  Check out Mew Mew Tokyo. Browsing and searching by series will also bring up the series title and volume number. Check out Princess Ai. Read more…

We have discovered that having an apostrophe in the ISBN field of a bib record can prevent the patron from placing a request in the PAC. I guess the Polaris software is just not equipped to deal with an apostrophe in the ISBN.
Those with the ability to add bibliographic records should take care when entering ISBNs. You should also be eliminating any apostrophes in words following the ISBN.

As of November 15, 2006, the catalogers at SALS and SCP will be making a change to the way they enter new call numbers in bibliographic records.
Â
The catalogers will only be adding Dewey numbers and cutter information in the 092 and 099 fields for new bib records.  They will not be adding prefix/suffix information (such as Fict, LT, Mystery, J, CD, DVD, etc.) This information should be in the item templates. The exception will be for music cataloged at SALS; this will remain unchanged. Because of this change, if a library uses item templates and has them set up correctly, libraries will no longer have to move data from one call number field to another.
Â
What this means to you:
You need to have your item templates set up correctly. Please contact your system trainer if you need assistance
Adding items for new bib records will require less manual editing for your staff for new items
Items added to existing bib records will still need to have the call number checked for accuracy
Â
If you have any questions, please contact the system trainers, trainers@sals.edu
