Proposal for change to call numbers
As of November 15, 2006, the catalogers at SALS and SCP will be making a change to the way they enter new call numbers in bibliographic records.
The catalogers will only be adding Dewey numbers and cutter information in the 092 and 099 fields for new bib records. They will not be adding prefix/suffix information (such as Fict, LT, Mystery, J, CD, DVD, etc.) This information should be in the item templates. The exception will be for music cataloged at SALS; this will remain unchanged. Because of this change, if a library uses item templates and has them set up correctly, libraries will no longer have to move data from one call number field to another.
What this means to you:
You need to have your item templates set up correctly. Please contact your system trainer if you need assistance
Adding items for new bib records will require less manual editing for your staff for new items
Items added to existing bib records will still need to have the call number checked for accuracy
If you have any questions, please contact the system trainers, trainers@sals.edu
